1960, December: ALGERIA AFLAME: President De Gaulle's visit to Algeria, to rally support for a referendum, is the spark for explosive rioting by die-hard French settlers, who clash with troops in fierce duels in which Molotov cocktails and tear gas bombs are exchanged. The Army stays loyal to the Government, and puts down the riots, in which a shocking death toll leaves Algeria briefly quiet again, with an ominous stillness that portends renewed violence.
