In Portugal, goats help fight forest fires Fernando Moura's goats devour the vegetation of Portugal's most important mountain range to fight forest fires such as those that killed more than a hundred people in 2017. The 49-year-old shepherd and his herd of 370 "fire-fighting" goats are part of a pilot project launched last March by the Portuguese government to clear bush areas in order to prevent, in the event of a fire, the flames from spreading from one forest area to another.
