Mass pilgrimage for orthodox christmas in Ethiopia Every year tens of thousands of Ethiopian pilgrims from across the country come to Lalibela's rock-hewn churches to celebrate Christmas. Ethiopians follow the Julian Calendar and therefore orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January. Some pilgrims have travelled for as long as three weeks and have come from the furthest corners of Ethiopia to observe the holiday. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
