Description
Remembering German victims of Bulgaria's Iron Curtain At a time when Europe prepares to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain, the topic about communist-era killings of East Germans who tried to flee to the West via Bulgaria's southern border remains a taboo. Former border army sergeant Metody Slishkov, 75, who served at Bulgaria's southern and western borders for 26 years until retiring in 1989, the same year the Iron Curtain fell, speaks about the instructions and procedures observed by the Bulgarian border army at the time. Slishkov was twice rewarded with medals for his service at the southern border when he caught alive 11 trespassers in four separate cases. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
