Mount Paektu, North Korea's holy mountain Mount Paektu is the tallest peak on the Korean peninsula and an active volcano, but for North Koreans, it is the mythical birthplace of Dangun, the legendary founder of the first Korean kingdom more than 4,000 years ago. It's also the place where the leader Kim Il Sung fought against Japanese forces, and where his son, leader Kim Jong Il was born, in a tiny hut inside of what’s known as the Secret Camp.
