Description
STOCKSHOTS Case of energy giant Total over 'inaction' in Uganda moved to commercial court A court in Nanterre, France declares itself incompetent to judge a case relating to energy giant Total's activities in Uganda, accused by NGOs of not taking into account the impact of two mega-projects on people and the environment. The court, which was ruling in summary proceedings (emergency procedure), referred the case to the Nanterre Commercial Court, as requested by the energy giant in December. Six French and Ugandan NGOs asked Total to review its "due diligence plan". This provision, imposed on all multinationals by a French law of 2017, requires them to "prevent serious human rights" and "environmental" violations among their foreign subcontractors and suppliers.
