Description
Former corruption buster and ex-ombudswoman Thuli Madonsela feels the imprisonment of Jacob Zuma is a step in the right direction for the country’s rule of law, but also laments it as a sad moment which could have been avoided. Madonsela detailed in a damning 2016 report how the wealthy Gupta family was implicated in widespread corruption under Zuma’s nine year presidency. Her report recommended the establishment of a judicial inquiry before which Zuma refused to appear. The 79-year-old reported to prison early on the 8th of July 2021 after South Africa's top court slapped him with a 15-month jail term for refusing an order to appear before this inquiry. SOUNDBITES
