155 people, elected in May, are to officially start work writing a new constitution for Chile to replace the one it inherited from the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet and is widely blamed for deep social inequalities that gave rise to deadly protests in 2019. Cristina Dorador Ortiz was born, raised and studied in the Atacama region and is now taking on a new task as an elected constituent, following recognition for her research in microbiology and her environmental advocacy in areas where mining has damaged salt flat ecosystems.
