Did they fool you? It did sound pretty realistic so it's understandable. But the thing was--there were no shuttles in space! But Dave Rickards is a pretty good actor and convinced a lot of San Diegans that the space shuttle was going to land at Montgomery Field due to a systems malfunction at Edwards Air Force Base. After the story aired Hal Clement said this: There WAS QUITE A TRAFFIC JAM...HUNDREDS OF CARS. IN FACT, SAN DIEGO POLICE TELL US THEY ARE LOOKING TO SEE IF THIS MIGHT BE A COST RECOVERY CASE, MEANING THEY COULD CONCEIVABLY BILL KGB FOR THE COST OF POLICE SERVICES IN STRAIGHTENING OUT THE WHOLE MESS.
