A study is being made to determine whether or not the old Del Mar pier should be destroyed. Sections of the old sports fishing pier, as you can see, are without a guard rail...two sections are completely separated and a person has to cross on a plank. Lifeguards recently had to rescue an elderly man who fell into the water. The structure was built by the original owners of the Del Mar Hotel in 1902 and it deteriorated to its present condition as a result of vandalism and storms.
