Description
Rome residents vote on October 3 and 4 to elect a new mayor, with a second ballot expected to take place on October 17 and 18. In the first round, outgoing mayor Virginia Raggi will face Roberto Gualtieri, former economy minister (2019-2021) supported by the Democratic Party, Enrico Michetti, a lawyer and candidate for the right and far-right coalition, and Carlo Calenda, an independent candidate and former minister of economic development in Matteo Renzi's government in 2016. Some 12 million voters are eligible to cast ballots in the elections, which are being held not only in the country's largest cities but in more than 1,000 smaller centres, including Morterone in Lombardy, which has just 33 inhabitants.
