Description
STOCKSHOTS of politicians in the Czech Republic campaigning in the run up to the general election on October 8-9. The centrist populist ANO movement of billionaire Prime Minister Andrej Babiš is tipped by pollsters to win, after campaigning on issues of migration, energy prices and post-Covid-19 economic woes. He recently invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Prague to canvass for his support. The Together grouping of the right-wing Civic Democrats, the centre-right TOP 09 and the centrist Christian Democrats has emerged as the most serious challenger to Babiš. Another alliance, of the anti-establishment Pirate Party and centrist Mayors and Independents, has come third in most polls. The far-right Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) movement, the far-left Communist Party (KSCM) and the left-wing Social Democrats (CSSD) are also vying for seats in the 200-member parliament. Other parties such as Oath or Tricolore stand little chance of garnering support higher than the 5 percent threshold for parliament entry. STOCKSHOTS
