Description
The Empire State building lights up in the colors of the French flag to honor Josephine Baker before she becomes the first black woman to be reinterred at the Pantheon in Paris, the mausoleum reserved for France's "great men". At the lighting event in New York, Baker's adopted son Jari says, "she wanted to show the French people and people in general that the union of races was possible," while French basketball player Evan Fournier calls her a "precursor" to the Black Lives Matter protests seen in recent years.
