Description
Finland, along with Norway and Sweden, is making moves to atone for past injustices against the Sami, an indigenous minority who inhabit the arctic wildernesses of the far north where they traditionally herd reindeer. For much of the 20th century, governments denounced the indigenous people as uncivilised, and forced children to assimilate into Finnish language and culture. Finland is currently preparing for a truth and reconciliation commission to start hearing testimony of Sami mistreatment, while Sami objects are being repatriated from the country's National Museum. But the Sami argue that their rights continue to go unrecognised, and are fighting government decisions to open up parts of their mineral-rich homeland to mining and power companies, disrupting reindeer herding.
