Thousands demonstrate in Barcelona in favour of the use of the Catalan language in schools. Professor of political science Oriol Bartumeus says the coexistence of the two languages in Catalonia is "absolute normality" and that "the problem is the political interest behind the debate". Although not new, this debate on education in Catalonia has been fuelled by a request from the parents of a five-year-old child in the town of Canet de Mar to enforce a November court ruling requiring a minimum of 25% Spanish language instruction.
