Some 7,000 people gather in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square for a fireworks show to mark the arrival of 2022, eating grapes and dancing to the rhythm of the clock's chimes. The square is only filled to half capacity to limit the spread of Covid-19, as Europe experiences a surge of virus cases from the Omicron variant. "The truth is that those who have come here know what they are exposing themselves to," says one attendee who "came to Madrid to party."
