Description
While the European Commission is likely to classify nuclear power as green energy, Austria has said no to nuclear power since the late 1970s. Emblematic of this struggle, the Zwentendorf plant was to be the first of a series of nuclear power plants to provide electricity to six million homes. But after a close referendum in November 1978, the billion-euro ($1.1 billion) project remained off the table, and Austria's nuclear era ended before it even began. The inclusion of nuclear power in the list of European "green" investments is a matter of contention among European countries, divided between France and central European countries on the one hand and Germany, Austria and Luxembourg on the other.
