Description
Nearly a quarter of the working population in Portugal lives on the minimum wage, making it one of the major issues in the campaign for Sunday's legislative elections. "There are many people who live with difficulties. Mainly when it comes to paying rent, or buying a house," says Amélia Casquinha Fernandes, a minimum wage cleaner. The Portuguese Minister of Labour, Ana Mendes Godinho, explains that "low wages do not bring added value" and believes that Europe and Portugal must make "a commitment to convergence in terms of wages and quality of life".
