Description
Rita Begum last saw her 14-year-old son Rakib Howlader handcuffed and detained at a police station in old Dhaka in 2018. The next day her father told her the boy -- accused of peddling drugs -- had been beaten to death and then shot to make it appear he had died in an exchange of fire.
Around 2,500 Bangladeshis have been victims of extrajudicial killings -- allegedly at the hands of security forces -- since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came to power in 2009.
But the killings have suddenly stopped two months ago thanks to the US sanctions, according to rights activists.
'I want the American sanctions to prevail,' says Begum, 'I don’t want to see any more mothers losing their children.' IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
