AERIAL STOCKSHOTS of the Portuguese island of Sao Jorge, in the Azores archipelago off the Atlantic coast, currently on alert after experiencing over a thousand small earthquakes in recent days, perhaps heralding a volcanic eruption or major earthquake in the coming few weeks. Sao Jorge, nearly 54 kilometres long and 8 km wide, forms a long volcanic mountain range that rises to more than 1,000 metres. Along with the islands Pico and Faial, it forms the central triangle of the archipelago and is known for its "fajas", fertile land at the foot of coastal cliffs, caused by landslides or lava flows.
