Description
Though it may be dark and crowded, residents from various informal settlements find shelter in the underground community halls of Umlazi Lodge hostel, after losing everything due to the recent floods that have affected Durban province. The conditions are far from ideal, says lodge volunteer Mabheki Sokhela: "There is not enough space, this community hall is too small for them, but because they got no other option, they use this." Devastating floods killed 259 in and around the South African city of Durban, a senior government official said Wednesday, after hillsides were washed away, homes collapsed, and with more people still feared missing.
