The association Children of the East has been active in Milan for more than 10 years, and has been doing its best to bring Ukrainian children and young people to Italy for holidays. At the beginning, this association was dedicated in particular to children, many of whom were orphans or in difficult circumstances, living near Chernobyl. The outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine forced the association to change its objectives. It is now trying hard to bring entire Ukrainian families fleeing the war to Italy. Yana Alieva is a university student from Kharkiv. For 10 years she has been hosted by Carla Marini's family in Milan. She fled from the war but cannot wait to return to her country.
