Description
It is twenty three years since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent the tanks into Chechnya to "pacify the Caucasus", and the violence has still not ceased - even for those who fled. Since 2009, two dissidents who testified publicly about Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov's abuses have been shot dead in Austria, a rich and peaceful country of 9 million people. Born in Austria from Chechen refugee parents, Zelimkhan Kazan (name changed to remain anonymous) cannot be naturalised. He does not earn enough money and has no Russian papers. Plainclothes policemen check him "three or four times a month," he says indignantly. "Some call me a fag, hoping for a violent reaction." Yet still he fears Russia's long arm: "they would torture me, let me starve" if they get to him, he says. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
