Police are deployed on the streets of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Saturday after the country's president declared a fresh state of emergency. On Friday a nationwide strike brought the country to a standstill, and police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse student protesters outside the parliament. Friday's state of emergency, declared by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, is the second in five weeks, giving security forces sweeping powers as angry demonstrators blame him for an unprecedented economic crisis.
