Description
With concerts cancelled and artists blacklisted, Turkey's summer festival season is off to a politically charged start that foreshadows the cultural battles brewing in the polarised country in the run-up to next year's election. Fans of Melek Mosso, a young Turkish artist whose concert was cancelled on the grounds that she encouraged "immorality", react to authorities for what they see as an attempt to "intimidate women". Apolas Lermi, a folk musician who has seen a couple of his concerts cancelled consecutively, says he feels "under pressure" for years as part of a wider campaign targeting artists from different ethnic origins in Turkey.
