Description
Standing in one of his huge wheat fields in Rai-Oleksandrivka, Donetsk Region, farmer Sergiy Lyubarsky wonders how on earth he'll manage to harvest his crops. Between the lack of fuel to run his combine harvester and the risk of being bombed, the chances seem remote. "The harvest is due normally to begin around July 15 but diesel is expensive and anyway there isn't any," he says.
As one of the world's biggest wheat exporters, Ukraine's ongoing inability to unblock its Black Sea trade routes has resulted in millions of tons of harvested wheat sitting idle. But Lyubarsky's situation suggests yet another problem: that some of Ukraine's farmers may now even struggle to harvest their crops in the first place. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
