Description
In a dramatic spectacle, Indian authorities demolish two residential high-rise buildings just outside New Delhi on Sunday. The destruction of the 100-metre-high "Twin Towers" in Noida, home to a concrete forest of similar structures, was a rare example of India getting tough on corrupt developers and officials.
"Apex" and "Ceyane" were 32 and 29 floors high, respectively, and contained between them nearly 1,000 apartments that remained uninhabited throughout nine years of legal disputes. The towers are brought down in seconds, creating an immense cloud of dust and debris, and bringing cheers from the watching crowd.
The controlled implosions, using 3,700 kilograms (8,160 pounds) of explosives, were India's biggest demolition to date, local media reported. ++completes 32H87G9++ IMAGES
