Description
Jose del Carmen Abril, known as "Carmito", and other farmers collect coca leaves in Catatumbo, Colombia. This region is home to the largest area of illegal coca leaf crops used to make cocaine in the world, making it a hub for organised crime. Abril, 53, is one of hundreds of thousands to have abandoned traditional farming to cultivate coca. "It is thanks to coca that we have been able to build schools, clinics, roads and houses," says "Carmito". IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
