Description
Months of intense shelling has seriously damaged many residential buildings in Ukraine's Kharkiv, a city located not far from the Russian border. Without waiting for government assistance, residents of one multi-storey building in the Saltivka district have organised themselves to carry out all the necessary repair work, driven by a small group of proactive neighbours. They have created a group chat to distribute the tasks, and picked one resident to be in charge of a common bank account for donations from others who live in the building. "We have resourceful men here, who have soldered pipes by themselves and donated money", says Natalia Novikova, one of the those in charge of the repairs. Other tasks include covering holes from shelling in the roof with unused doors, replacing shattered windows with wooden planks and plastic film, and fixing water and heating pipes.
