In the eastern Ukrainian town of Siversk, at risk of suffering the same heavy fighting seen in nearby Soledar, Oleksandr Kuzenko and his neighbours take solace in an old tradition as they hunker down in their basement shelter. Malanka, or the Old New Year of the Julian calendar, is well-known for its mid-January celebrations in Western Ukraine featuring colourful costumes, masks and gatherings.
