Description
In the yard of a hospital in Hatay, the city worst-hit by the earthquake which struck Turkey and neighbouring Syria in the early hours of Monday, hundreds of bodies of the quake's victims taken out of the ruins lie massed on the ground. While some are covered in blankets, most of them are bundled up in plastic bodybags. Grieving relatives come to the yard each day to check each body in the hope and fear of finding a familiar face. A voluntary health workers who joined the recovery efforts at the scene told the AFP team that this huge hospital yard has been filled with "hundreds of plastic bags" since Monday brought by the dozens in the back of big "mass morgue" trucks. "This is so horrifying. I pray to God to forgot all these what I have seen. I can’t forget their faces," confides to AFP on condition of anonymity. If a person is not identified for 24 hours, they are placed in the back of huge trucks that take 50 to 60 bodies at a time to the "cemetery of the unidentified" in and around Hatay. Whether their families will ever learn of their final destination remains unknown. IMAGES
