Description
Every day since the deadly February 6 earthquake, rescue workers from HAYTAP, the Turkish Animal Rights Federation, have been scouring the rubble, pulling cats, dogs, rabbits, cows and pigeons from the ruins of Antakya. The organisation is often called by grieving owners who are unable to retrieve animals from homes levelled by the disaster. "Put yourself in their shoes, they have lived through an earthquake and have not been able to save their pet" explains Sule Baylan, a HAYTAP spokesperson. In other instances, it is neighbours reporting an animal left behind, its owners either dead or in hospital. Baylan continues: "They contact us and, with all our means, we try to recover their animals." IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
