Description
With declining stocks of white fish across the United Kingdom, many fishermen in Whitby and the North East have turned to lobster fishing. To ensure the survival of the lobster stocks, a hatchery has been opened in Whitby, which raises the crustaceans to a juvenile stage of development, before releasing them into the ocean, increasing the chances that more will survive into adulthood. In the wild, lobsters have a "very low chance of survival" explains Joe Redfern, marine biologist and founder of the Whitby Lobster Hatchery, whilst "in the hatchery, we protect them and get that survival rate, especially for that early life cycle, we can boost that maybe to 20, 20%."
