"Taking care of the environment is a condition of economic development," says Maisa Rojas, Chile's environment minister Maisa Rojas, who is in charge of shaping the country's first "ecological government" headed by the young leftist leader Gabriel Boric, tells AFP. Chile, which is the world's leading copper producer, a major player in lithium extraction, salmon fishing and timber production, is trying to forge its own path towards an environmentally friendly development model, albeit without a clear benchmark.
