Description
With its Basilica, wide avenues, ongoing building sites and abandoned wooded parks Yamoussoukro is slow to assume its role as the political capital of Ivory Coast. Built as the country's second capital in 1983 by Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the city has not yet hosted the institutions of the republic. "He wanted to make a green capital. He wanted to make a city on a human scale: no big buildings, no polluting industries, etc. That was Félix Houphouët-Boigny's project" says Secretary General of the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Foundation.
