Description
An organization based in Washington, DC gives training courses in the use of Narcan, a drug that reverses overdoses caused by opioids such as fentanyl, a drug 50 times more powerful than heroin. "We're trying to get everybody carrying it", explains Johnny Bailey, community outreach coordinator at HIPS, an organization that provides "harm reduction" services to sex workers and drug users. The nasal spray has become an indispensable tool in the fight against the opioid epidemic gripping the country. "If someone is not responding, I can pull it (Narcan, ed) out my backpack and administer it," says training participant Awa Sargent. "Everyone should be able to do it," she adds.
