Description
Farmers in Romania's capital of Bucharest take to the streets to protest over the impact of Ukrainian grain imports on the local market and to ask for more financial compensation from the European Commission. Thousands of farmers are unhappy with the flood of cheap Ukrainian grain, exempt from custom duties after an EU decision, which poured into Romania and other eastern and central European countries since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Farmers protested in several big cities throughout Romania, but also at some border points, where they brought tractors and threatened a bigger show of force in the coming weeks if their demands aren't answered. In an attempt to ease tensions, the European Commission recently decided to hand out compensation worth 53.6 million euros to Bulgarian, Polish and Romanian farmers, with the latter due to receive 10 million euros from the total amount, far from what local associations asked for, and which one union representative in Bucharest describes as "an offensive amount".
