Description
Residents of Amsterdam find themselves unexpectedly siding with the city's sex workers as they oppose plans put forward by Mayor Femke Halsema to move legal prostitution from the historic red light district to a suburban "erotic centre". The issue has become a key battle for the future of Amsterdam, as the city tries to shed its 'sin city' image and ease the impact of mass tourism. "We don't want any nuisance" says Stan Czerske, a resident of one location touted for the new centre, "we have schools in the area and very young children". Another of those opposed to the plans is "Michelle" a sex worker, who explains "the mayor says that we are just a tourist attraction...that is simply not true". It could take several years before the plans come to pass, with Amsterdam's municipality looking to decide on a location by the end of 2023. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
