Description
His easel stands in front of a window overlooking Rio de Janeiro's iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, but Brazilian artist Jota prefers to portray the modest houses of his native favela. The works of the 22-year-old self-taught painter have become highly sought after by collectors both in Brazil and abroad. And he is not the only one: a new generation of black artists born in the favelas of Rio is gaining a prominent place in contemporary art fairs and prestigious museums.
