"Everybody opened their homes to us and offered us food and drink, they were very welcoming," says Abu Qassem Mohammad Ibrahim, a Sudanese evacuee from Khartoum making a stop in the town of Wadi Halfa as he heads to Egypt. In three weeks of fighting between rival Sudanese generals that has plunged the impoverished country into turmoil, thousands have rushed to escape, often only having had the time to grab their most basic essentials.
