Description
The decision -- to stay or to leave -- is foisted on many families with young children living near Ukraine's frontline since Russia launched its fully-fledged invasion in February 2022.
Some families are holding out, citing poor finances or attachment to their homes: "This is where my son was born. This is my homeland. I understand that it can be dangerous to stay but where is it not dangerous?" explains Karina, mother to a 12-year-old boy living in the Donetsk region. Others, like Veronika and Vitaly Sorokin left the moment they sensed their son was in danger: "They (Russians) came in, started walking around the houses. We were just afraid for our son. The decision was made quickly," she says.
Ukrainian prosecutors believe 480 children have been killed since the war started and more than 1,400 wounded. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES ++ TEXT 33EE4EF
