Description
"Of course, I will be scared (if the opposition wins). Sure, it's true that it's our country and that we should go back one day but not in these conditions," says Syrian refugee Neroz Hussein. Since the start of the Syrian war in 2011, Turkey has officially become home to 3.7 million Syrians -- probably closer to 5 million in total -- who fled the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, Russian bombardments, and Islamic State group attacks. Most have "temporary protection" status, leaving them vulnerable to forced return. On the eve of the May election, many within the community fear the victory of opposition candidate Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, whose CHP party advocates the return of Syrians "within two years".
