Description
The number of executions recorded in 2022 reached its highest level in five years, with 883 people executed in 20 countries, an increase of 53% in one year, deplores Amnesty International in its annual report on death penalty. Iran and Saudi Arabia are among the countries pointed out in this list, still dominated by China, but whose results are no longer published by the NGO due to lack of transparency. Apart from the Covid pandemic, which has delayed many trials, Amnesty attributes this sharp rise to the intention of some authoritarian countries "to use the death penalty as a tool of terror against the population".
