Description
In a stalemate since 25 April, 'Operation Wuambushu', a long-promised operation against substandard housing and illegal migration in Mayotte started at the beginning of the week raising hopes among some inhabitants, with one watchword: to put an end to crime on the French Indian Ocean island. "I hope it will bring a big change to Mayotte, that we will live and go out like before," says Ada Saandia, a hospital employee in Mamoudzou. Anicha, who lived in the destroyed shantytown of Talus 2, is desperate: "We don't mind them demolishing but we need them to give us something to stay with our brothers and mothers. They say they are giving us accommodation, but it's for three months, six months. Then where do we go?". IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
