In February 2022 the remains of an unknown American soldier killed in World War I were unearthed by an undertaker during excavation work at a village cemetery in France. After more than a year of research to prove the remains were indeed American, the unknown soldier was buried with full military honors 105 years after his death, after a ceremony attended by hundreds of well-wishers including American and French military chiefs of staff, military personnel, their families and the general public, in the first such ceremony for 35 years.
