Description
Hundreds of activists from the NGO Greenpeace force open the gates of a production site belonging to the steel giant Tata Steel in Velsen near Amsterdam, despite a formal ban on the protest from the local authorities. The protest takes aim at the pollution caused by the plant's activities, which the environmental organisation considers to be "one of the most polluting metallurgical plants in Europe and located in the middle of a densely populated area". "This factory here in the Netherlands is literally making people ill... 51% more lung cancer in the surrounding area than our national average," protester Rose van Vuuren tells AFP.
