Description
On a 21 km route along the Jatunyacu river in the Ecuadorian Amazon, numerous clearings interrupt the thick vegetation while gold miners bulldozers continue to devour the jungle. While waiting for the Constitutional Court to rule on an extraordinary protective action by which the Indigenous people are trying to stop mining in the province, and reduce deforestation, excavation activities also threaten communities that live on tourism. "More than 180 hectares were destroyed and nobody wants to pay two or three dollars to go and see an illegal mining cemetery," says Andres Rojas, provincial delegate of the Ombudsman's Office.
