Description
The rare Garrano horse, a pony of the Iberian horse family from northern Portugal, and the European bison, both ancient breeds, are being used in a pilot experiment in the Iberian Peninsula, to help reduce the risk of wildfires by clearing away scrubland and the vegetation that fuels blazes. "We can clearly call them sapper horses as we call our 'brushcutter' horse brigades sappers, this corresponds exactly to the work these horses do in helping to clear these grounds," says Antonio Cardoso, mayor of Vieira do Minho.
