Ecuadoran Indigenous leader Yaku Perez narrowly missed making it into the second round of the 2021 presidential elections that saw the victory of former right-wing banker Guillermo Lasso. Only two years later, the 54-year-old lawyer and climate activist is seeing a new opportunity to run for office in snap elections called for August, after Lasso dissolved Congress to avoid an impeachment trial.
