Description
Industrial fish farming is expanding on the Greek island of Poros, near Athens, to the dismay of fishers and tourism workers, who fear the plans will disrupt the local economy. "We don't want these fish farms on our island" says veteran fisherman Spiros Papaioannou, "us fishermen are going to be chased away, that's for sure!" The Greek state has long planned to make Poros an aquaculture hub, with fish farms set to cover a quarter of the island - 600 hectares of land and 269 at sea. Behind the plans is the EU's allocation of 92 million euros to promote aquaculture in Greece by 2027. IMAGES AND SOUNDBITES
